Crooks Tower (7,134 feet) is the highest point in Lawrence County, South Dakota. During my first full day in the Black Hills,
my friend Kyle and I wanted to go on a high pointing adventure. It took some time and hard work to find this obscure hill
in a remote section of the Black Hills, but it was worth it.
If you are searching for directions, the key point is to take Road 189.4 for two miles,
then turn at Crooks Lake. (Crooks Lake is very small and there may or may not be water in it.) The next dirt road is something like 189.4b (may not be exact). It's a bumpy
road. Study your topographical map and you'll see it as the second major hump about 0.5 miles up the road.
The second road.
At the summit of Crooks Tower. Honestly, this is not really a mountain, just a large rock formation that juts from the ground on three sides. It was clearly the highest point in the area and coincided with the topographical map we obtained online.
To think we were above everyone in Lawrence County, South Dakota ... from Lead to Deadwood to Spearfish ... now that's sublime! :)
Like Terry Peak, fog thwarted much of the views as well, but there was a patch of blue sky and we at least had some visibility. Enjoy the video below. :)
