Too Close for Comfort: Hayman Fire Nears Woodland Park
June 19, 2002

As of yesterday (6/18), the southeastern flank of the Hayman fire had moved closer towards Woodland Park, maybe about 6 to 7 miles away. My digital camera can't really show just how HUGE the smoke plumes are. |

Standing on a ridge just west of Woodland Park, one could see four "hot spots" that were shooting large plumes of smoke into the air. Zooming in as much as I could, notice the purple shades of light one part of the fire was creating. |

Downtown Woodland Park. CLICK HERE to view Hayman fire pictures from last week in Lake George, near where the fire was set. (Keep in mind, Lake George is about 20 miles west of Woodland Park.) |

I zoomed in on another "hot spot" that was
shooting up light grayish smoke somewhere behind that ridge. |
 |
I was pleased to get this picture, which I think is my best of the fire. The last thing I want to do is sensationalize or trivialize this event! As a photographer, I find myself being driven to follow and photograph this fire! |
 |
A few miles up on Route 67, near the blockade at Manitou Lake, people seemed real nervous. I can't blame them. |
 |
A shot of just how gray the sky is in some spots. |
 |
A camera person captures the fire with Pikes Peak in the background. By the way, it was right at this spot that I saw a man drop a cigarette out of his car window. I then followed him and shortly later confronted him about his stupidity. |

The biggest issue is making sure nobody loses their life over this fire ... especially firefighters who are on the front lines. |
