Steve Pummels Tanya In Living Room Scrabble Match
427-247 Considered An "Ass-Kicking"; Tanya Takes Defeat In Stride (February 2006)
BUENA VISTA, COLORADO -- Steve "ColoradoGuy" Garufi soundly
defeated his cute brunette friend, Tanya, in a living room
Scrabble match at his cabin last week. Both
expected the match to be competitve in view of Tanya's
successful history of consistently defeating family members and friends,
but it was not meant to be for Tanya, a friend visiting from the Seattle area.
Things began with a "bang" when Steve's opening move of
"REFRAIN" gained him 76 points to start the match. After just six rounds,
the game was practically over with the score at 245-99. Tanya had little
chance to recover with Steve obtaining the five highest point letters, Q, Z, X, J, K, and his using of four of the triple word score squares.
"This is just a sad, sad, sad state of affairs." said
Tanya, near the end of the match with her being stuck with
four I's, two U's and one C.
"I know Tanya is a better player than what happened today." said Steve,
"She understands making double plays, playing the board not your tiles and
some other strategies. I just had luck on my side."
Asked directly if Tanya thought the lopsided
Scrabble match should be termed an 'ass-kicking',
Tanya dodged the issue and merely said: "I don't use that kind of language."
"It certainly is an ass kicking. I would never let a girl win."
said Chris (known as "Cadjex" on the forums)
in the chat room, while discussing
the Scrabble match and whether Steve should have gone easy with his friend.
As one-sided as the Scrabble match was, Steve has had
even greater victories against female friends. He once defeated Jae
by the score of 495-236 (a 259 differential) that made
news on this web site in 2002, but his largest victory against this friend was a 461-198 trouncing (263 differential) during that same year.
"I just remember one time Jae getting really mad and storming out of the cafe."
explained Steve, "She asked, no she begged me!, not to play on a certain part of
the board so she could put a word down. Of course, with her saying that, I played that
spot as a defensive measure."
Steve is reportedly really good at Microsoft Hearts, Ms. Pac Man and large jigsaw puzzles,
based on previous articles on this web site. He also has a page linked to the front page with a list of fun games.
